Review of Three Friends in 'In Dublin' Magazine
In these cynical times it's a pleasure to hear something
as heartfelt as this solo release from Josh Johnston, a young Dun
Laoghaire-based pianist and composer. Entirely self-produced, it's
an eclectic mix of classical, folk and jazz material including original
instrumentals and covers of artists as diverse as Bob Dylan, Hoagy
Carmichael and Irish song writer Noel Brazil. There are notable
contributions from jazz singer Jane Dalton and Zrazy saxophonist
Carole Nelson but the album's defining feature is undoubtedly Johnston's
stylish piano contributions. His own compositions are so evocative,
in fact, that the covers, although pleasant, sound a little inconsequential
by comparison. Although Three Friends is, by any standards, a fine
debut album; it would be interesting to see Johnston attempt something
more unified and ambitious next time.
